Blueprint for Success:
A 12-Part Masterclass for AE Firm Leaders
About the series
Architecture and engineering schools teach you to design. They do not teach you to run a firm. Yet from the moment you make partner or hang your own shingle, the business demands are relentless: staffing, fees, cash flow, strategy, culture. Most principals learn by trial and error, if they learn at all.
This series teaches architecture and engineering firm leaders how to manage time, fees, cash flow, staffing, and strategy — built from the ground up for the way AE practices actually work.
Douglas Teiger, FAIA, spent 30 years figuring it out the hard way so you do not have to. This 12-part series distills three decades of firm leadership into a practical, no-nonsense curriculum built specifically for AE professionals ready to run their practice with the same rigor they bring to their best work.
Meet Douglas Teiger, FAIA
Douglas Teiger, FAIA, spent three decades building a 32-person architecture firm from the ground up — and quietly reinventing how he ran it along the way.
After earning his B.Arch from Cornell and founding his firm in 1989, Douglas took an unconventional detour in 2009: a Master's in Spiritual Psychology from USM. What he brought back was a practical toolkit for building a culture where people do their best work without burning out. The result was a more focused studio, stronger client relationships, and a team that actually wanted to be there.
His peers took notice. Douglas served as President of AIA Los Angeles in 2017 and on the AIA National Strategic Council — bringing the same philosophy he applied inside his firm to the profession at large.
In 2019, he made a deliberate exit: he elevated three associates to partners, sold his shares, and launched Teiger Consulting — turning 30 years of hard-won lessons into a resource for the next generation of firm leaders.
His personal mission: to live an inspiring, balanced life — across family, coaching, painting, and sport. That balance isn't the footnote to his career. It's the whole point.
1. The Power of Time Management: Balancing Projects, Profitability & Life in the AE World
Part 1 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
Profitability starts with how your firm tracks time — and most practices are leaving money on the table. Douglas Teiger shares the advanced time management strategies he refined over three decades of firm leadership: budgeting by activity, analyzing non-billable drag, and structuring a schedule that balances performance with sustainability.
2. The Chart of Accounts: Your AE Firm’s Path to Financial Control
Part 2 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
Financial clarity in an AE firm starts with one foundational document — and most leaders never fully unlock it. Douglas Teiger cuts through the confusion around accounting terminology and shows you how to build a chart of accounts tailored to your practice. Master this, and you'll have the framework to budget with confidence, track the flow of money with precision, and plan from a position of strength.
3. The Art of Estimating Fees: Unlocking Profitable Projects for Your AE Firm
Part 3 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
Fee estimation is where firm profitability is won or lost, and most leaders get it wrong before a project even begins. Douglas Teiger walks you through the entire estimation process from the moment a proposal request arrives: defining scope, developing a Rough Order of Magnitude for construction costs, and calculating project hours with precision. The result is a simplified, repeatable system for structuring fees that protects your margins on every engagement.
4. A Guide to Client Onboarding: Crafting Winning Proposals and Contracts
Part 4 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
A poorly structured proposal can undermine a project before it starts. Douglas Teiger breaks down the craft of writing proposals that speak directly to each client and project, moving beyond generic templates to a disciplined approach that builds confidence and sets the right expectations from day one. Master this, and your proposals become a competitive advantage rather than an administrative hurdle.
5. Cash Flow Essentials: How to Calculate Burn Rate & Runway for Your AE Firm
Part 5 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
Knowing how long your firm can operate without signing another project is one of the most important questions a leader can answer. Douglas Teiger breaks down the financial metrics that give you a true read on your firm's runway, including gross burn rate and cash flow patterns that most principals never track closely enough. Understand these numbers, and you lead from clarity rather than assumption.
6. Shaping Success: Strategies for Nurturing Your AE Firm’s Project Managers
Part 6 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
The quality of your project managers determines the profitability of your projects. Drawing on 30 years of firm leadership, Douglas Teiger outlines the skills, training, and development practices that turn capable architects and engineers into effective PMs. Walk away with a clear framework for hiring, nurturing, and holding your project management team accountable to results.
7. AE Profitability Metrics Demystified: Utilization Rate, Efficiency Rate, and Cost Rate Multiplier
Part 7 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
Profitability at the firm level comes down to a handful of metrics that most AE leaders have never been taught to read. Douglas Teiger breaks down the cost rate multiplier, utilization rate, and efficiency rate, showing you how to define your breakeven multiplier and uncover your true cost rate. Master these numbers and you gain the clarity to set ambitious financial targets and actually hit them.
8. What to Track and How to Track It: Essential KPIs for Every AE Firm
Part 8 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
What gets measured gets managed, and most AE firms are flying without instruments. Douglas Teiger walks you through the essential KPIs every firm leader needs to monitor, and shows you how to build a dashboard, reporting, and scorecard system that tracks performance month over month. The outcome is a culture of accountability where financial and operational decisions are driven by data, not instinct.
9. The AE Firm’s Foundational Trio: Defining Your Business Structure, Org Chart and Role Accountability
Part 9 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
The structure of your firm shapes everything from decision-making to profitability. Douglas Teiger breaks down the key business structure options available to AE firm leaders and clarifies the critical difference between an organizational chart and an accountability chart. Get the right people in the right seats, and alignment, productivity, and performance follow.
10. The Aligned Firm: Crafting Your AE Firm’s Story & Mission-Vision Statement
Part 10 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
A firm without defined values defaults to whoever is loudest in the room. Douglas Teiger walks you through a disciplined process for defining your core values and crafting mission and vision statements that reflect where your firm is truly headed. More importantly, he introduces a practical tool for assessing whether your employees, clients, and projects are aligned with those values, so your culture becomes a competitive asset rather than an afterthought.
11. The Path to Prosperity: How to Build & Measure Against Your AE Firm’s Strategic Plan
Part 11 of the ‘Blueprint for Success’ Masterclass Series
Strategic planning without financial grounding is just wishful thinking. Douglas Teiger breaks down the planning process into a clear, actionable framework covering the who, what, when, where, and how of building a plan your firm can actually execute. He then shows you how to connect your strategy directly to the KPIs that drive financial performance, turning long-term vision into measurable results.
12. The AE Firm’s Guide to Growth: How Marketing & Business Development Create Predictable Revenue
